Film poster analysis

The text ‘Titanic’ in the film poster is in bold and white. The colour white contrasts with the black background. This is done to promote the film and to persuade the audience to watch it. The text is in capitals. This is also done to grab the audience’s attention. The colour of the text is really bright, and eye-catching; this is done to make the audience focus on the name of the movie in order for them to watch it. The background of the poster is black and white. This could be interpreted as suggesting that there will be a fight between good and bad in the movie. This makes the audience want to watch it more.
The word ‘Titanic’ suggests that the movie will be depressing but it is a movie the audience should look forward to.  The ship in the poster gives a hint to what the movie will be about. The fact that the ship is between them shows that the ship will have an enormous impact in their lives. All these facts draws the audience’s attention which make the audience want to watch the movie for confirmation.
The denotation of the poster is a shot of Leonardo Dicaprio holding Kate Winslet.  This shows that she is holding onto him for personal protection. Leonardo is holding her suggests that his role in the movie is bigger. Although, ironically, in the movie, Kate has more ‘status’ and is more known. The expressions of the two protagonists (Leonardo and Kate) seem as if they are terrified. They expression seems distant as if they know they can’t escape the unfortunate event they are about to encounter.
An example of the mise en scene used in this poster is key light that reflects on Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Wislet. Light key lighting is also used for the ocean in the poster. This is to show that darkness lies in the ocean. The light is focused on Leonardo to emphasis on his importance in the movie. Their facial expression also highlights the storyline of the movie. When the audience take a look at the poster, they can see the tragic in their eyes. Moreover, Leonardo seems to be wearing cheap clothes in contrast of what Kate is wearing. Yet, Leonardo seems more powerful as he dominates the poster. This challenges the audiences opinion of these relationships between the poor and the rich.
Titanic is a movie watched by the whole world. It is a classic movie by James Cameron based on the true tragic story of Titanic. The story of the Titanic is a tragic story, and whoever survived it will always be respected. All the people who died during that cold night will always be remembered and honoured. This classic by James Cameron has won a fair amount of awards. These includes: ASCAP Award, Oscar, Saturn Award, Amanda, Eddie, Annie, Excellence in Production Design Award, award of the Japanese Academy, BAFTA Film Award and many more.
