Learner Response:

-Nice choice of music
-Excellent parallel collage- balance of colours/ consistent image
-Contrapuntal- good use of colour but fas too much reliance on text rather than images. Within film language, the power needs to be in the image and the connotations the images provide.
-Use appropiate language in presentation in class.
The two trailers I chose are 'Rebecca' and 'Sinister.'

The film 'Rebecca' is directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The beginning of the trailer is really catching and ideal. We firstly get a shot of the house to let the audience know about the location of the film and the setting. Sadly, we don't have many trailers doing this anymore. Trailers firstly introduce the characters in the current trailers I've seen. We then have a zoom in. The camera then follows a path through a mysterious forrest. I think that using a point of shot  is a good technique as the audience feel like they are the one walking. We then get a quick change of scene into a book named 'Rebecca' This causes tension as the audience doesn't know about the book and who Rebecca might be. We then have someone opening the book and light hits 2 particualr line. The shot used for this is a close up, this is to let the audience read. There's then a shot of someone, a guy of class, walking towards a lady. Panning takes place in 00:53 as the camera follows the lady going down the stairs. There's then a sudden change of scene and we go back to the book. Only this time a different line is lighten up. There's then a shot of the man and lady from earlier hugging. This lets the audience know before hand that they will have a relationship. We then get a shot of the house with low lighting as we see many shadows. In the minute: 1:30 we get a shot of the man and the women in the car. This is followed up by a shot of them in the resturant. This lets the reader know that they will have a stronger relationship. In the last second we see 'Rebecca's' name again. This causes tension and makes the audience question.

The second film I chose is Sinister. At the beginning of the trailer we get a shot of a family. The shot makes it look as if the family is only a memory, we then get a quick change of scene where we see a family drawing. We then a zoom in of  a house. The audience are shown the text '9 months later' then we get a shot of the house again. Only this time someone is moving in the house. For a bit we are shown the fmaily moving in.  In 00:49 we see the old family happily playing from an old camera. We then a change of shot were we see the same happy family hanging.  We then get quick shots of many events taking place. The quickness emphasises on the horror.

  • As you can see, in 2010 the most popular movies were fantasies and animation. In 2011, this changed. Action was the main genre watched by people as technology has developed making action movies look more realistic. Currently, the most watched movies are actions. The genre of Action has taken over the film industry as more and more people are fascinated by it.

This video is another great example of banned ads. I think that the fact that the female actress was killed is a little bit inappropriate. This is because children watch a lot of TV and this could be encouraging this type of behavior.  This ad shows that killing someone isn't really important as no big deal was made when she first died. This is promoting inappropriate behavior that could influence little kids.
This commercial was banned as it includes bad language. This ad was banned as it portrays parents as being stupid and unknowing. This ad shows that children who speak more English than their parents can trick or manipulate their parents. This ad promotes bad language and shows that listening to this type of music can be okay. The main audience of television are children. This shows children that this behavior is acceptable, this is probably why it wasn't approved and therefore banned.
In 2005, Microsoft  created a jump in ad for XBOX 360. This was never aired as it showed people on the subway playing 'shoot em up.' It evidently shows that such behavior is acceptable as adults are the actors in this. Many kids watch TV  and this could be encouraging a negative behavior. As we all know, what they are pretending to have are: 'guns.'This can be seen in a different way by little kids. Kids are gullible and easily believe into things, so this advert was banned. This ad promotes bad behavior and makes what they are doing 'permissible.'

Throughout the movie low and high key lighting is used. At the beginning till 00:09 second low key lighting is used to emphasis on the mysteriousness.  The lighting quickly changes to high key. This is evident as there aren't any more shadows on her face. This could be used to show that everything is not as it appears. If she was able to change from mysterious to bright, there must be something about her that’s suspicious.  The scene changes from them talking to walking away happily. There’s a shot of a painting behind them. There’s then a shot of each character in the movie. This is probably done to introduce the audience to each character. Films don’t do this anymore. Films begin and as the story goes the characters are introduced, so the film industry is changing. There’s then a change of scene where we see three men talking to each other. The lighting used in that scene is high key lighting; this is to show their facial expression and to show that there isn't anything suspicious going on. There’s then a quick change of scene that shows the woman and a man talking from the beginning. On the woman, high key lighting is used. However, on the man, low key lighting is used on the man. This could be suggesting that the man may be someone suspicious. There are a lot of shadows that can be seen on his face. There’s then another change of scene.  The next scene is of a man and woman talking in a house, and then we go back to the initial couple talking. They talk then walk on, with the woman surprised. There’s then a scene of a man walking in and injuring a woman and a man surprisingly. There’s then a text that reads ‘Never more daring’ the word ‘daring’ is the only word in italics. This could be symbolic of something bad happening in the movie. There’s a then quick change of scenes to shows parts of the movie.

In this image, low key lighting is used as theirs shadows on her face. On the image, you can still see the contrast between white and black. The shadows are mainly on her forehead, below her nose and on her hair. On the ceiling, there are shadows. On this still image, there’s hint of white that coming from the light bulb. Using the low key lighting emphasises on the danger and horror. Low key lighting helps the audience to focus on the character’s facial expression. Low key lighting indicates how frightened the characters are. It is usually used in horror movies to show the mysteriousness, surprise and danger. The lady on the right side seems to be frightened and scared. We are able to deduce that she is in a dangerous situation as we can see she has shadows spread on her face. Her eyes seem to have widened as if she can see something. We can’t tell the colour of her as low key lighting is used.  We also cannot see whether her mouth is opened or not. This is because there are shadows all over her mouth. Although most of her face is covered with shadows we can still see that her frightened face. This is what low key lighting does. Although it hides most of the face, the audience is still able to see the characters facial expression.

ColoursAt first, the colours aren't very bright. Then they go from dull and dark to slightly brighter.
The colours keep on going brighter except the end, where they go back to being dark again.
One of the colours that stood out to me the most was the brown colour of the pond. Maybe this is because it’s the first shot of the house.
The colours change through the whole movie, from when she is going to the house, when she’s in the house and when she is outside the house again.
    Composition and types of shots
The trailer shows different shots through the trailer, such as close up to show the character’s facial expression.
Firstly, it’s a shot of the telephone ringing. Before the telephone rings again, we see short clips of events taking place in the movie. As this is happening, we get shots of the telephone getting closer. I think that this shot is successful as it shows within seconds what the film is about and what the audience should be expecting.
The screams, the dark colours and the running show that it’s a horror movie.
At the beginning, when the babysitter is taken around, she is shown the house and the kids. This is done to also increase the audience’s knowledge about the house.
    Size
For a few seconds, the logo of Screen Gems is shown so the audience can focus on it. The logo is dominant and cannot be missed.
The text, ‘she thought it would be a quiet evening’ and ‘trapped’ are shown for a 1-2 seconds. This is done to give hints about the movie’s storyline.
The text, ‘When a stranger calls’ is given a big font and it’s given few seconds to show it. This is to show its importance.
    Setting
At first, the setting is in the car when they are trying to find the location of the house.
The setting then changes into the house. Most of the settings shown in the trailer are used to show where the movie is going to take place.
Most of the trailer is based on the house. This is done to let the audience know that most of the vent will take place there.
    Lighting
The lighting differs throughout the movie. At first, everything is bright as it is during the day. This is to show that nothing takes place during the day.
When she is left at the house with the kids, the lighting changes slightly darker. This is to show that something is about to happen. At the end of the trailer, the lighting is dull and dark to emphasis on the danger. As the movie becomes more active, the colours become duller.
    Pose
During the trailer, there is a lot of close up. This is used to show her feelings and emotion and to emphasis on her facial expression. This helps the audience understand what she’s feeling.
Her facial expression is being focused on when she is running away from the caller. This is to show how much she’s struggling.

    Colour
The colours used are black and grey. This connotes the negativity in this poster.
These colours could represent a painful part of his life.
These colours aren't ideal for an advert as it is dark and not persuasive.
    Framing
The text, ‘I am what I am’ connotes that he isn't afraid of showing who he is now. This could suggest that he used to hide his true self before, but not anymore.
The fact that the text and his face are given the same size shows that the lyrics are as important as he is.
The fingerprints on the corner suggest that he’s been arrested before. This explains his pose and the fact he isn't smiling.
    Size
The size of the text, ‘I am what I am’ is one of the first things we can see. I think that this is really important as being you is what the advert is about.
The size of 50 cent is really big and quite dominant.
The rebook logo is not big enough to be seen. I think that it’s a mistake as the audience can’t see the logo.
    Shot
The shot is a close of 50 cent. This is perfect as it shows his facial expression.
Using 50 cent for an advert is ideal as he has many fans.
    Subject of Matter
The subject is 50 cent. I think that the text is supposed to show that it’s never too late to change or to wear Rebook.
The fingerprints are also another subject. I think finger prints are included to show that even if you are in trouble, it’s not too late.
    Setting
The fingerprints have no background. This is done to let the audience focus on the fingerprints.
50 cents background is black. This is done so the audience can focus and so he stands out.
    Lighting
The posters lighting isn't very bright, this could suggest negativity
Low key lighting is used. The light is only focused on half of 50 cent’s face. This could symbolise the changes his made in his life.
    Pose
We can’t tell whether his sitting or standing.
He seems really angry as he isn't smiling or anything
