  1. What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?
In the Ill Manors trailer the audience are provided with a lot information. It is essential to provide the audience with a lot of information as the trailer is really short. If the audience aren't satisfied they won't watch the movie. In the Ill Manors, the audience learn about the movie. They learn about the movie's name. The audience are told about the main characters in the movie and about the real names. They are also told about the directors name. This is important. This is because if the audience know about the directors previous work they are more likely to go and watch the movie. Another important thing that the audience are told about is the release date. This is important because the audience need to know when they are able to watch the movie. They are also told about the rating of the movie and quotes from from people that have watched the movie.
How are trailers distributed?
The Ill Manors distributer is Revolver Entertainment. Revolver Entertainment was involved with Kidulthood and Adulthood that were really successful. Revolver Entertainment are involved with British films or programme that need some help to be noticed. The producer of Ill Manors is Plan B that was also involved in Kidulhood. He is famous for his music so he is promoting both his music and film. His trailer was played at the cinemas before other movies, on youtube and twitter was a major reason to why his movie is successful.
How does Ill Manors use trailer conventions?
The trailer provides the audience with typical information of the movie. This include the release date. this is very important. The trailer also provides the audience with the main stars of the film or the actors that are worldly known. It also provides the audience with the directors name. It provides the audience with the star ratings. This is important because the audience need to know if the quality of the movie is good enough to satisfy them. It also provides the audience with quotes from people who have watched the movie. This is also important because the audience can check if the movie is good enough.
Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used?
The audience for the movie is teenagers from 18 to 35. This is because the movie includes alot of innapropiate language and sexual activities. I think that the main selling point of the movie is the fact that it is directed by Plan B. He is very known as rappers so his fans are most likely to go and check out the movie. The trailer gives out alot about the narrative. The audiece know that the movie is narrated by more than one narrator. The movie is focused on more than one person which is why the movie is narrated by more than one person. I dont think that the main stars of the movie are shown as all the main characters of the movie are presented at the beginning of the trailer. This shows that all the characters in the movie are equally important throughtout the movie.  In the trailer it is shown that the director of the movie is Plan B. This is the main selling point of the movie which is why it is visible in the  trailer. The audeicne are told about the release date of the movie. This is essential as the audience need to know when is the movie available for the to watch. There is voice-over used in the trailer. This is because the audience need to know what Plan B is telling the audience.
How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music, camera shots/movements/angles and editing?
The audience know from the trailer the genre of the movie. This is presented in the trailer as in the trailer we are shwon the voilence and crime that take place in the movie. They are also shown that there is a lot of innapropiate scenes in the movie The setting shows that the movie take place in a urban area. The lighting also shows that the movie is very crimanal and voilent and very innapropiate for kids underage. The camera shots show what the movie is about as they present different characters in different manners. The angles show who is powerful in the movie and who is powerless such as the prositute. The editing shows the events in the movie and most of the things that will take place in the movie. It presents the characters in the manner they behave throughout the movie.

1)  Research all the Institutions involved in the production of Ill Manors. List them with a summary of what their contribution to the film was. ?The script of Ill Manors was partly based on actual events and stories Drew had when he was young, such as a woman prostituting herself in order to repay a drug dealer. The film had been in development for three years prior to filming, however Drew struggled to secure finance for his film. Ill Manors was Greenlit for production in 2009 as part of the Film London Microwave scheme. Ill Manors was financed by Film London, BBC film and supported by Skillset, The UK film council and the MAYOR LONDON. For the production of the film, Drew hired both experienced and inexperienced  actors and actresses. The principal photography began at 1st September 2010 at Milles Studio. Filming lasted four weeks at locations in London. Editing began at December 2010 however, it was delayed due to Plan B being at Defamation Of Stickbland Banks tour during 2010 and 2011
2) How much Ill Manors cost to produce (its budget)The budget of ILL MANORS was £100, 000
3) Creative Skillset, was the first of its kind and has gone from strength to strength in the past few years.Creative Skillset is the Sector skills Council  which supports skills and training for people and businesses to ensure the UK creative industries stay competitive and productive.
4) Ill Manors audience are people aged form 18-25. This movie is aimed at British people who live in an urban area as most of the things demonstrated in this film are things experienced by people who are age from 18-25. Working class are also aimed as most of the things that take place in the movie are things experienced by working class as they can't afford to have  a cosy comfortable life. This movie can be watched by mainstreamers as it is as a movie that affordable and entertaining to watch, explorers are also likely to watch it as they explore things and they would want to explore and see what the less fortunate ones experience in their everyday lives.
5)Who is the main distributor of Ill Manors?
The main distributors for Ill Manors include Revolver Entertainment and Benelux film distributors.   Revolver Entertainment is a marketing-lead, all rights film distribution company. Founded in 1997, the company has operations in both London and Los Angeles. Benelux Film Distributors (BFD) is a joint venture of various independent film distributors and markets a wide range of films in Cinemas in the N Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
6)How was Ill Manors promoted?
To promote the album, Atlantic Records partnered with live stream production company LoveLive to deliver a live stream event of the album launch party to YouTube. This movie was also promoted via viral marketing.  Videos of the trailer and music videos were put on youtube and the movie was promoted through facebook and twitter.
7)Compare this with a big budget blockbuster. What are the main similarities and differences?
I think that for one, there isn't as much quality as there wasn't as much budget as blockbuster films, and the lower quality was very evident and noticeable. Another thing is the acting. As the actors weren't wildly known, they weren't as good as other actors in other movies but this is partly because most of the actors were inexperienced. Another thing is that in this film is that it's not as known as blockbuster films. I, personally, never heard about this movie apart from when It was introduced by our Media teacher. I believe that on similarity is the excellence in the movies. I think that this movie is as good as any other blockbuster movies and the excellence in the movie is evident throughout the movie especially if the movie is watched by the right audience.
8) How does the trailer for Ill Manors hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques? ACTING- the acting is very realistic and the actors act in a manner that hooks the audience as most of the audience are able to relate to the things that happen in the movie. SHOTS- the camera shots used, such as close-up and extreme-close up are used adequately as they show every little detail and help the audience pick up small details.Enigma codes- there are many enigma codes that the audience hope to solve and figure out throughout the movie.
9) How does the trailer for Ill Manors balance plot and spectacle?
I think that the trailers is suitable for the movie, as after watching the movie the audience learn that the trailer shows what takes place in the movie and it helps the audience know before hand what is going to take place in the movie and what they should be expecting as they are watching the movie. The trailer shows the lives of working class who end up becoming drug dealers for the males and become prostitutes for women. The trailer shows that life isn't easy for the working class and it shows how the 'rich boys' look down to the poorer ones, and through the movie this is exactly what we see. Overall, the trailer demonstrates whats going to take place throughout the movie in few minutes.
10) Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18 certificates). Research film certification and outline what is deemed acceptable for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?
The following is a list of what is most likely to warrant a 15 certificate, although it is a very rough guide:
The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behavior.
Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. Promotion of drugs which are easy to obtain are unlikely to be allowed.
Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.
Dangerous behavior (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) can be allowed provided the detail of such is low so that it cannot create too much of an impression of the viewer. Abuse of weapons which are easily obtained will not be tolerated
Frequent use of strong language can be permitted, although very strong language needs to be restricted and would have to be seen as reasonable in the context. Frequent usage of very strong language would be seldom allowed.
Nudity in a sexual content must be restricted however nudity in a non-sexual content does not.
Sexual activity without strong detail would most likely to be allowed. Some strong sexual references may be allowed to, but very strong ones may not, unless used within reason. Sexual acts or references with the intention of causing arousal is not likely to be permitted.
As long as the film is appropriate for 15 year olds, no certain themes are prohibited.
Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. The same applies to references. Any sexual violence should be discreet and be strongly justified
18 rated movie: Only adults are admitted.
Nobody younger than 18 can rent or buy an 18-rated VHS, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game, or watch a film in the cinema with this rating. Films under this category do not have limitation on the bad language that is used. Hard drugs are generally allowed, and explicit sex references along with detailed sexual activity are also allowed. Scenes of strong real sex may be permitted if justified by the context. Very strong, gory, and/or sadistic violence is usually permitted. Strong sexual violence is permitted unless it is eroticised or excessively graphic.

2) Vampire diaries
3) Hollyoaks
4)Revenge
5)Misfits
1) Pretty Little Liars-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDR0nICerNg
Pretty little liars opening is very catchy and eye-popping. Pretty little liars opens with a close up scene that portrays Hannah (the character who is supposed to be dead.) In this scene someone is putting mascara on her. A close up is used to show her eyes. Also, with the close up the audience can see that her eyes aren't moving. This helps emphasising that she isn't alive anymore. This scene is followed up by another close up that shows lip gloss being put on her lips. Her lips seem really pale, this reminds the audience that she is dead. To continue, in the eye close up and lips close up, there is her face in the background. Her face is really pale and seems like it hasn't been taken care off. There's then a close up of her feet. In this close up there's someone tying her shoes. Her feet are also pale, and they seem dead aswell. There's then a close up on her hair being curled. Followed up by a close up showing someone putting nail vanish on her finger nails. This is followed by a close up on her eyes and someone closing her eyes. This scene is followed by someone shutting her coffin, and there camera goes up to show the four main characters looking depressed.  The continuity of these few shots is at a good standard. It makes it seem that this is taking place with no stops in between. There's then a medium shot showing the four main characters looking around in a upset look. The camera then closes up on one of the girls as she puts her finger on her lips as if she's telling the audience to not say anything. There's then a small scene to show the programme's name. I think that this is a very good opening that catches the audience quickly. It makes the audience want to discover what is this big sceret and who is the girl that has died.
2) Vampire diaries- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWpkwFaB2Ls
This opening opens with Nina Dobrev (playing Elena) giving a distant look, to show this a close-up is used.  The colours  used in thr background are dark colours such black and grey. She slowly moves her head up as her hair begin to move slightly. There's then a hand that suddenly shows a hand thats caressing her, possibly a male's hand. There's then a scene showing the same character form the first scene, only now she looks more gentle and insecure. A close up is also used for this. This is followed up by a medium shot showing the main female character running up from a hill. This shot slowly turn into a close-up. Then there's an extreme close up that shows the character's face only now with two male hands caressing her face. This helps the audience now that there is two men involved with this female. There's then a medium shot showing Paul Wesley playing Stefan. This medium shot zooms in and turn into a close up as his name is shown on the side. There's then a scene showing Ian Samoholder. The same as  Paul's scene we see a medium shot that slowly zooms in and becomes a close up. His name is also shown on the side. There's then a scene showing all of the characters in the programmes  walking up a hill. This shot slightly changes as most of the characters vanish. This was done to show that some characters are more important than others. There's then a close up to show Jeremy as his name is shown on the side. After him, there's a shot of Katerina Graham. After showing her there's a scene that is close up of her hands holding a bottle in her hands. There's then a scene showing her facial expression. This helps the audience know that there is something to do with magic. The ending scene is a medium shot showing Elena sitting with Stefan. I think that the Vampire Diaries opening scene is very attracting as it portrays most of the things that take place in the programme.

3) Hollyoaks- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmFk3nQXkPg
This opening opens with a close up on a female character's mouth as she takes a bite off a cherry that's of the same colour of her lips. In this cherry are the words 'Hollyoaks' this is to advertise the programme. There's then a long shot of this building with many female's and two of these are over the a guy. The long shot zooms in and turns into a medium shot, a close- up and an extreme close-up.  There's then change of scene showing a female character winking at the camera. She takes of her jacket and throws it at the camera. There's a quick change of scene showing a male character. To show this a medium shot is used that slowly turns into a close up. The screen than shows another female character who seems to be dusting things of her jacket. A medium shot is used for this., The scene than changes into a male- character dancing to a beat, a medium shot is used for this scene. There's than another change of scene that shows a male character with flag cape that show's the American flag. This could be used to show the patriarchy of this character. There's than a medium shot showing a female character wearing angles wings. This shot could be used to show that this character angelic. There's than a medium shot of an male character, this shot zooms in and becomes a close-up. His wearing a black leather jacket, this shows his danger. There's than a medium shot showing a female in a magazine, this could show that she is the fashion type. At the end of show there's the title of the programme. This opening is essential as it's mainly used to introduce the main characters and I personally think that the continuity of this opening is excellent as everything looks like it took place at once.

Revenge- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=853GmML-QwA
This opening opens with the main blonde female character getting water  over her feet. There's then a close up on her hands caressing a letter. This could show that there is mystery that takes place in the programme. There's than a scene that shows the main character from a low angle shot. This is used to show her dominance. There's than a scene that shows the protagonist face on the side, a close up is also used for this. There's than a quick change of scene that portrays fire in her eyes almost like she is hungry for revenge, an extreme close-up is used for this. There's than introductions to many of the characters in the programme. At the end of the video there are small scenes showing the main female character. Medium shots and close- up are used for this as we can look at the protagonist features. The video finished the exact same way it started, with the protagonist standing in front of the beach. For this scene, the protagonist is wearing white clothes that shows her purity and angelic character. This is a contrast of the scene where we see fire and flames in her eyes.

Misfits- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liVLWjIBQ4o
The opening of misfits opens with a medium shot of a one of the main male characters with a cigarette. The shot cuts and chages into a a close up of the main female character tying her hair up almost as if she is getting ready for something. There's than a shot showing another of the main male characters also preparing himself.  There's than two 2 close up shots presenting two  of the other characters in Misfits. There's than a medium shot showing all the characters that have been presented at this stage. There's than a shot of all of the characters wearing heroic costumes. There's than a ashot of one of the characters that was presented before possibly on a skateboard or rollers. There's than a cut and a bshot showing all of the characters wearing orange garments and picking up trash from the ground. There's than few shots showing moments of Iwans charcter. Ther's than few shots showing the character of Lauren Socha. The same shots are used to present Nathan Stewart's character. The same is used for Antonia Thomas's character. Shots of the programme are used to present Robert Sheehan's character. There's than a shot showing all of them together again.

Wednesday 5 December 2012

My preliminary exercise tells a story of a guy who walks to up to a girl. He is asked by the girl who is sitting at the desk, 'mission accomplished?' He answers by saying 'Yes, Ma'am.' He talks to her with nervousness and fear. This connotes that she is of some kind of authority. This female with authority asks him 'When's the next attack?' He answers by saying 'Tomorrow night. ‘This shows that both characters are planning an attack. In this preliminary exercise, I was working with Jinan and Maram. We all agreed that we had to make our exercise of something that will leave the audience thinking 'WHAT?'
The Preliminary exercise starts with the main male character walking to the door, a close up was used for this. I think that showing his feet heated up the scene. It acted as a foreshadow. There's then a scene of the male character standing for few second, a medium shot is used for this. We made the male character stand to show his nervousness and insecurity the male character walks towards the chair, a medium shot is also used for this. He sits down and there's a close up of his hands. His hands are linked and nervously making movements. This was also used to connote nervousness. We then used a 180 degree shot. It was over the shoulder of the female 'boss' and the 'nervous' man. We used this technique correctly and showed what we’re trying to show. The continuity was really effective, as it gave the audience the feeling that it was all happening with no stop's.The acting was plausible. It was realistic and it reflected on our shots. If the acting wasn't up to standards it would've ruined the quality of our work. There some few mistakes that we committed. We made the preliminary exercise take place is a noisy environment; this made some of the lines incomprehensible. This could be improved by using a quite environment.   I think that we genuinely learnt so much from this exercise. We learnt new techniques and also learned from mistakes that we made when our exercise was being played and our classmates were commenting on it. Overall, it was really good practice. What went well in our preliminary exercise is that we used all of the shots in a good way. We made sure that everything we did would connect with the rest of our short film. We made sure that the continuity of our work was done in a good manner in order to make it all seem like it was in the same shot. Furthermore, I personally think that the acting was up to standard as it demonstrated and portrayed our ideas. What could go better next time is: less noisy background. This small video was taken in the common room. The noisy common room is in the background and this could divert the concentration of our audiences. Another thing we can improve on is the shot that shows the main male character standing for few seconds before he goes on to walk. I think that shot was wrong for us to include as it made the short video look less plausible.

Analysis on Pretty Little Liars:

Saturday 1 December 2012

Ill Manors is a music video based on the trailer of the movie named 'Ill Manors.' It is by Plan B, a British rapper who now joined the film industry. This music video demonstrates many stereotypes of teenagers and England. This video shows how some people are stereotyped. This also shows the ignorance of the government towards young teenagers and how this has lead to the behavior of teenagers portrayed in this trailer.

Media forms:
What techniques does the video use to establish the setting and engage the audience?
The video uses a very good pace for teenage females and males. As teenagers have a small amount of concentration, this music video won't get boring and they won't get tired of it. This music video it up to their standards. The lyrics are also very suitable for teenagers as slang is used.
The clip is very stereotypical as it portrays typical teenagers and the government and society's view of teenagers.
When Plan B says 'rich boy', he is referring to the government and politicians. He argues that their wealth has made them blind to point that they don't realise that that everyone is 'Broke in Britain.'

Media representation:
How is gender/age/ ethnicity represented in the video?
It is a very dominant representation. Drugs, alcohol and cigarettes are used the reinforce the typical stereotype of teenagers. He also tries to challenge the stereotype by showing some agreements. The mise-en scene is used to show many of the things carried by teenagers or used by teenagers.

Media institutions:
In what ways is the video typical of music videos and what values does it promote?
Firstly, this is a very typical music video Genre convention: editing, sound. The main character is the main rapper. This video is very anti-government and anti-establishment. This video is also supporting the working class as it's acting as the working class's voice.
This video has counter hegemonic values. It is saying that we need more equality and that we need to start treasuring values.

Media Audiences: Who does this text appeal to and why?
I think that it is very evident that this music video appeals to teenagers and working class. This video is very anti-government so anyone who feels like that something that are happening are wrong would really enjoy watching this video.
